The following is a list of 311′s studio albums (1993 to present) ranked in order of my preference. Now a word about how I ranked the albums… The formula I used to rank these albums is as follows: (average ranking of the top ten songs on an album) + (average ranking of the remaining tracks on an album) + (the average of an album’s mean and median song rankings). What I think I captured by using this composite formula was to reward an album’s contribution of great songs to the 311 catalogue, to penalize an album (such as Soundsystem) for having weak tracks that are a detriment to the album as a whole, and, finally, to evaluate each album overall. But then there’s Transistor… To account for Transistor’s extreme length, I ignored its five weakest tracks in my calculations. (Rankings last updated June 5, 2009)
